We know, we’ve been blowing our own horn so hard about our 100-episode milestone that we’re practically trumpeters.
But this time we bring you six things we’ve learned, six pearls of wisdom🦪 from doing this 100-episode stint of The 4AM Report. Here they are:
1. Let go of perfection
It’s easy enough to get hung up on sound quality, things like do I need video, do I need captions. or to script everything out? Do I need all of the things? Well, you don’t need anything other than a basic recording, even if you start on your phone. Getting it done is better than perfect.
2. Consistency is key
It’s important to schedule it and know you have to meet a deadline, whether you batch produce or not. Our podcast, The 4AM Report, needs to go out 4am in line with our theme. We agreed that this is non-negotiable, so we’re going to do it. And that’s why we have a library of 100 episodes.
3. The Anchor Theory⚓ makes all the work easier
The anchor is just using a larger piece of content more fully. So, if it’s your podcast, then you do it and it’s finished. But we say, break it down into smaller pieces. A blog post from your transcript, reports or white papers, using the video or images – basically spinning that piece of content into bite-sized pieces (read more on this here).
4. You will enjoy the domino effect
Your podcast can impact your network. The 4AM Report has helped us meet new people, develop a rapport, and gave us exposure to their audiences. And it’s brought in business. A lot of people get hung up on the vanity metrics like the number of subscribers, or their rating on iTunes. But the emotionally intelligent way of measuring ROI is the domino effect where you include people and prospects – you need to evaluate and measure success based on that.
5. Don’t be afraid to have fun with it 🎉
Have fun with the relationships, but generally, with your podcasts as well! Go where you want to go and don’t stress about the details. We started as a marketing podcast and now we’re more a business podcast aimed at small business founders that leans into marketing.
6. Don’t underestimate the power of a name 📛
Good naming is more important than you can possibly imagine. We all know those poor kids who have names nobody can pronounce, spell, or remember.
Says Will: “When I reach out to people on LinkedIn, there’s so little space to include information. So, I always give a quick introduction and say I’m the co-host of The 4AM Report, a podcast on what keeps marketers and founders up at night. When you construct a note with some care, you usually get a response. About 90% of the time, people come back and comment on the name. In the last week alone, people have asked me to send them my favourite episode, or to tell them about the name, or even just want to recommend a guest. Our name is a gift that keeps on giving.”
Find out more about our name in this episode, and how a story turned into a name. More on being authentic and being you, and of course, more wisdom we’ve amassed from doing The 4AM Report. Every Thursday. At 4AM. Tune in for more pearls🦪.
