Did you know that you can snaugh? That’s when you laugh so hard you snort, then laugh even harder because you snorted, then snort because you laugh. Well, that’s what we talk about because if you can get your audience to snaugh, you’re really onto something!
In this episode of the 4 AM Report, our guest Mairlyn Smith, talks to us about serious things like colon health, cooking quick ‘n easy (fiber-rich) things in the kitchen and how to take care of your gut health. Dashed with some of her on-brand humor, of course. Hence the snaugh, which I think we all did this episode (always shits and giggles right?).
Mairlyn Smith is a professional home economist (P.H.Ec) who’s an alumnus of the Second City Comedy Troupe. She is a popular MC and keynote speaker, a guest expert on popular TV and author of eight award-winning cookbooks. Her niche came from unexpected places like improv and kitchen comedy combined with scientific nutritional advice.
She believes eating a fiber-rich diet can make you happy, which spawned the title of her book, Peace, Love and Fiber. Along with meditation and practicing gratitude, all without being hooky of course. She’s goofy and fun and 100% herself. So, should you be trying to stand out by being funny too?
“We all have humor in us. But usually when we’re being authentic. So, when you try to be funny, you’re usually not. Don’t be afraid to take a leap, and show people who you really are. And they’re going to fall in love with you. Because you had the balls to be able to go, here I am. Take it or leave it.”
On farts and fiber
“The power of fiber kept coming up, with research showing that the people who led the long and healthiest lives were the ones that had the most fiber in their diet. So the book (over 100 fiber-rich recipes) is a funny way of looking at fiber. I talk about farting, because it is one of my favourite topics. I talk about the two colonoscopy doctors who told me that I have the most beautiful colon. See, that’s funny, right? Hello, we all fart, get over it anyway. If you don’t think you’re farting during the day, you’re holding them in and farting at night, you just don’t know it.”
That, friends, is the Dutch Oven 😊. Ewwww! We’re all for releasing that gas during the day, when there’s some fresh air to neutralize it (we hope!).
“Right now, during COVID, I think it’s really important to know that the health of your gut, your GI is related to how much fiber you eat. So if you’re looking to support your immune system, eating a fiber rich diet is great. Generally, about 25-35 grams of fiber a day for women and about 38-40 for men. Just don’t start too fast. Without enough water you’ll make poo sculptures in your gut and you’ll get constipated.”
Now that’s what we call painting a vivid picture. And a unique personality! For more hilariously useful tips from Mairlyn, listen to the full episode. We guarantee at least one snaugh.
